Dreadlocks Cut for the Cause

Posted by webmaster in Real People with Dreadlocks, Dreadlock Videos, Dreadlock News on November 13th, 2006 |  No Comments »

A few months ago Kalen Stevens-Heap had her dreadlocks removed at Knotty Boy in Vancouver. This was no ordinary dreadlock removal. Kalen was going to sell her dreadlocks to raise funds for the Children’s Wish Foundation, in memory of her friend who died of Cancer at age 15. And it’s all on video…

Just want to say, Kalen, I think that was a very sweet gesture.

Controversial Dreadlocks

Posted by webmaster in Dreadlock Facts, Dreadlock Drama on October 30th, 2006 |  1 Comment »

This post isn’t necessarily news, it’s just my own little rant that I felt like communicating.

Over the past couple weeks I’ve been surveying people regarding the subject of dreadlocks. I’ve asked questions to people I know of all races, ages, religions, styles, both male and female. I tried to get a really good cross-section of society. And you know, what I discovered surprised even me…and that’s not easy.

I asked them what they think about dreadlocks. Now, these are all people who have never worn dreadlocks. My VERY conservative roommate confided in me that she has wanted dreadlocks since she was a little kid. I was shocked. One of my friends who’s an activist and the most liberal girl I know…or so I thought…said that she hated dreadlocks, thought they were disgusting and that “dreadlocks are for black people.” I didn’t even know what to say. One 42 year old woman told me that she feels that dreadlocks give people the “wrong idea” about them, meaning if you have dreadlocks people will thing you use drugs. I didn’t invalidate any of these people for their various responses, but I have to say I was appalled at the negatives. Not because there were people who were opposed to dreadlocks, because of course there will always be haters of everything. My upset was how racist and idiotic the naysayers sounded. What they said sounded to me like something Archie Bunker would say.

Fortunately, over 80% of the people I surveyed gave dreadlocks a giant thumbs up, provided the dreadlocks are not too fat and are kept neat and clean. I’m glad to know that dreadlocks are making their way into mainstream society and are, for the most part, viewed as a positive aesthetic element of society. Of course, I didn’t survey people in Iowa or Wisconsin…so it’s probably a bit skewed, but there you go…the survey of the day.

Cheers.

The Best Dreadlock Salon on Earth

Posted by webmaster in Dreadlock Hair Care, Dreadlock Accessories, Dreadlock Salons, Links on October 27th, 2006 |  7 Comments »

I’ve done a lot of research into the subject of dreadlocks. I’m not the world’s foremost authority or anything, but I know…something. More than most, less than some. Anyway, in all my searching, talking to people, reading blogs, phone calls, etc. I keep coming back to Knottyboy.com. This company rules the school as far as dreadlocks go. Their staff are wonderful to talk to and totally helpful. They have their own products that they’ve created based on experience with what works and what doesn’t, what’s lacking in the dreadlock supply industry. Knotty Boy’s Dread wax is probably the most well-known of these products and is known worldwide, and can be bought directly from their website.

And that’s just the start of it. All the OTHER things you end up wanting or needing once you get dreads is available through Knotty Boy too. Beads, hair wraps, synthetic extensions in case you decide you want a few pink ones, tams, all of it…it’s all right there. So you can walk into the salon with your plain old hair and walk out with a gorgeous head of locs, all your haircare products, beads and fun accessories, tshirts, everything. Well, you have to make an appointment, but you know what I mean. It’s so one-stop-shop as far as dreadlocks go.

The Knotty Boy salon is in Vancouver. I’ll be making a trip there in the next month and I’ll come back with some awesome surprises for all of you, and of course some photos.

Until then, cheers to the best dreadlock salon on earth. I <3 you guys.

Dred Violin

Posted by webmaster in Dreadlock Photo Gallery, Dreadlock Facts, Real People with Dreadlocks on October 26th, 2006 |  No Comments »

Dreadlocks have become prevalent in the rock & roll scene, but what about other areas? Well, violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain sports dreads which he’s grown down to his waist.

Roumain was raised in Southern Florida and received his Ph.D. and M.A. from University of Michigan. He has performed with with various well-renowned artists such as the Chicago Sinfonietta, 2 Live Crew, and Dizzy Gillespie, and has collaborated on newer projects with minimalist composer Philip Glass, choreographer Bill T. Jones, and jazz singer Cassandra Wilson.

“The notion of what the violin represents and its history has nothing to do with what I represent,” Roumain says. The dred violin he further states “means more than black and white; it means a mixing — a mixture, literally.” Roumain has found a very successful way to merge the various genres of classical, jazz, hip-hop and rock in a style which he has named “Dred Violin.”

Find out more and listen to Daniel Bernard Roumain’s music at NPR.org.

As I’m sure you’ve already noticed, dreadlocks are NOT just for rastafarians.  Anyone can sport beautiful dreadlocks, even you.  And if you’re one of the people who likes to follow the trends of Hollywood before making fashion decisions, here are a few of the famous people who have had dreadlocks.

Bob Marley - Ok, he is a rastafarian, and probably the single person who really started the trend in American culture.

Whoopi Goldberg - She’s very well-known for her dreadlocks.  In fact, she even noted them in concrete at Mann’s Chinese Theatre!  See it here!

Rob Zombie - A rock star you all know and love, Rob Zombie is a man of many talents.  He’s a rock star and was front man for White Zombie, he’s a film maker and a writer of comics.  And of course, a proud owner of dreadlocks.

Mike “Puffy” Bordin, formerly of Faith No More, is one of the first, if not THE first man in the metal music scene to sport dreads.  He still wears them.

Zack de la Rocha, ex-Rage Against the Machine political punk-rapper is well-known for his dreaded hair.

The list continues with Jonathon Davis and Munky of Korn, POD, Ani DiFranco, David Beckham other bands such as Mushroomhead, Ill Nino, Ademe, Switched, Flaw and Neurotica, all with band members who have worn dreadlocks.

And if those aren’t enough stellar examples, there’s always Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the
Carribean”!

History of dreadlocks

Posted by webmaster in Dreadlock Styles, Dreadlock Photo Gallery, Dreadlock Facts on October 25th, 2006 |  1 Comment »

Dreadlocks have been around much longer than you may think. In fact they’ve been around well over 2000 years. There earliest written documentation of dreadlocks comes from the Vedic scriptures, where a god named “Shiva” wears “twisted locks of hair.” Some say the date of this writing is 2500 BC, but there are others who dispute that the document is from closer to 500 BC. Either way the dreadlock phenomenon is over 2500 years old.

There are many reasons throughout history why dreadlocks have been worn. And dozens of cultures throughout the world, and throughout history, have donned these locks. The rationalities range from religious and political beliefs to mere fashion and ease of use.

For more specifics about which cultures have worn dreadlocks, when and why, check out the definition of dreadlocks in Wikipedia.
