As I’m sure you’ve already noticed, dreadlocks are NOT just for rastafarians.  Anyone can sport beautiful dreadlocks, even you.  And if you’re one of the people who likes to follow the trends of Hollywood before making fashion decisions, here are a few of the famous people who have had dreadlocks.

Bob Marley - Ok, he is a rastafarian, and probably the single person who really started the trend in American culture.

Whoopi Goldberg - She’s very well-known for her dreadlocks.  In fact, she even noted them in concrete at Mann’s Chinese Theatre!  See it here!

History of dreadlocks

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Dreadlocks have been around much longer than you may think. In fact they’ve been around well over 2000 years. There earliest written documentation of dreadlocks comes from the Vedic scriptures, where a god named “Shiva” wears “twisted locks of hair.” Some say the date of this writing is 2500 BC, but there are others who dispute that the document is from closer to 500 BC. Either way the dreadlock phenomenon is over 2500 years old.

There are many reasons throughout history why dreadlocks have been worn. And dozens of cultures throughout the world, and throughout history, have donned these locks. The rationalities range from religious and political beliefs to mere fashion and ease of use.
