Dred Violin
Dreadlocks have become prevalent in the rock & roll scene, but what about other areas? Well, violinist and composer Daniel Bernard Roumain sports dreads which he’s grown down to his waist.
Roumain was raised in Southern Florida and received his Ph.D. and M.A. from University of Michigan. He has performed with with various well-renowned artists such as the Chicago Sinfonietta, 2 Live Crew, and Dizzy Gillespie, and has collaborated on newer projects with minimalist composer Philip Glass, choreographer Bill T. Jones, and jazz singer Cassandra Wilson.
“The notion of what the violin represents and its history has nothing to do with what I represent,” Roumain says. The dred violin he further states “means more than black and white; it means a mixing — a mixture, literally.” Roumain has found a very successful way to merge the various genres of classical, jazz, hip-hop and rock in a style which he has named “Dred Violin.”
